Gary Walker

Although he only conducted Todmorden Orchestra for one season, Garry Walker made a big impression and has gone on to become a conductor of some standing, working with some of the UK's finest orchestras.

Garry Walker was born and educated in Edinburgh, and started playing the cello at the age of seven. He gained a scholarship for a place on the prestigious joint course at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University. It was when he was in his final year that he conducted Todmorden Orchestra.

In 1999 he gained the first ever distinction awarded by the RNCM for conducting, and went on to win the Sixth Leeds Conducting Competition. In October of that year he made a highly successful London début conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican. Since then Garry Walker has worked with many of the top orchestras in England and Scotland – particularly the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Paragon Ensemble. He has appeared regularly at the Edinburgh Festival since 2002, and is to make his début this season at English National Opera.
