Christopher Swaffer

A contemporary of Jeremy Carnall at Chethams School of Music, Christopher Swaffer conducted Todmorden Orchestra for six years, from 2000 – 2006, providing not only stability, but with his passion for new music, also introducing the orchestra to music very much outside its usual repertoire, including the UK première of the Ives Society Critical Edition of Charles Ives’ Second Symphony, and culminating in Todmorden’s first performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, ‘The Choral’.

Christopher Swaffer was born in Kent, and educated at Chetham’s School of Music and Manchester University. He graduated with a Masters degree in composition and conducting – studying for the latter with Gary Walker (q.v.). He has also participated in master classes with Colin Metters and George Hurst.

Christopher has conducted many diverse ensembles, and is currently Principal Conductor of the Edinburgh Festival Orchestra and the Auricle Ensemble, as well as Artistic Director of the Scottish Chamber Music Players and guest conductor for Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also worked on the continent, and has been invited to conduct the Bombay Chamber Orchestra.
