Lawrence Killian’s involvement with the Todmorden Orchestra began after the death of Dr. Ben Horsfall, and he conducted his first concert in June 1987.
Educated in Keighley and living in Halifax, Lawrence Killian is a local man with a keen and wide interest in music. He studied at Bath University, and also at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies in London. As a trumpeter he played with the National Youth Orchestra and many local orchestras and was a finalist in the Shell/LSO music scholarships. Since taking up the post of conductor with Todmorden Orchestra, he has worked with many local orchestras as well as founding the Orchestra of the Square Chapel in 1997.
Composition is another of Lawrence Killian’s interests. To date he has had two works published and his First Symphony has been performed on Classic FM.
Lawrence Killian handed over the baton in 1991, but remains with the orchestra as principal trumpet, and performed Haydn’s trumpet concerto in November 2005. He also conducts from time to time, and has also arranged music for the orchestra. He is currently composing a work for the Ted Hughes Festival in 2008, the première of which will be given by Todmorden Orchestra.
